The website “Women Village Heads” was established by Beijing Cultural Development Center for Rural Women (BCDC) in July 2007. This website was created as a platform for interaction within women village heads right after Rural Women magazine has its supplement, Women Village Heads magazine, There are 600 thousand administrative villages in China and about 1.2 million village heads. But among village heads, women only account for 1%-2%. Because women village heads are such a small group, and these women village heads sometimes feel lonely and helpless, they hope to gather together and support one another.
BCDC has put much effort on rural women’s participation in politics since 2000. We have held many training sessions and seminars, set up a network for women village heads, and had a column for women village heads on our website. By doing so, we hope to change the political status of rural women.
With the popularity of internet and the development of reconstruction of the countryside, more and more farmers are learning computers and they now know how to receive information on the internet. Therefore, following the establishment of the website “Rural Women”, we set up the website “Women Village Heads” to satisfy the needs of women village heads. Although there are still many rural areas where people cannot get connected to the internet, but we believe in the future everyone will have access to the internet, including all the women village heads.
The website “Women Village Heads” contains topics as “The problems of agriculture, villages, and farmers”, “Physiological and social gender”, “How to govern a village”, “Stories of village heads”, “Capacity building”, “Tips for life”, etc, and we also have interactive forums on the website.. At present it has a basic structure with more than 10 columns like the “Trends of New Countryside,” “Gender Perspectives,” “Explanation of Policies,” “Charismatic Village Heads,” “Capacity Building,” “Information on Supply and Demands,” “Investment,” “Demonstration of Model Village,” “Coming to My Village,” “Letter Box” and so on. We hope women village heads can use the website fully, and suggestions are welcome to make the website better.
